Christopher Columbus was born in Genoa, Italy in 1451. He was the son of Domenico Colombo and Susanna Fontanarrosa (weavers). In his youth he was a merchant seaman in the Mediterranean Sea.
In the decade of 1476, sailing with the Portuguese, Columbus planned to reach Asia by crossing the Atlantic Ocean. In 1492 achieved the support of Queen Isabella of Spain and signed the Capitulation of Santa Fe, document that allowed to start their journeys.
In his first voyage reached to the island Guanahani (San Salvador), Cuba (Joan) and Santo Domingo (The Spanish). He returned to Spain thinking he had reached islands of Asia.
On his second voyage explored the Lesser Antilles, Puerto Rico and Jamaica; in the third discovered Venezuela; in the fourth met Central America but believing he had reached the Indies.
He died in Valladolid in 1506, not knowing it was the discoverer of the American continent.
